What is a wetting agent?

A wetting agent is a surfactant that can reduce the surface tension or interfacial tension of a solid, allowing water to spread on or penetrate the surface of the solid, thereby wetting the solid.

In the dyeing and finishing process of textiles, wetting agents can reduce the surface tension or interfacial tension of fibers, allowing the treatment liquid to spread on or penetrate the surface of the fiber, thereby wetting the fiber.

Cotton fabric dyeing and finishing generally undergoes alkaline processing, such as scouring and mercerizing. In these processes, strong alkali may significantly reduce the effectiveness of the wetting agent added to the solution. Alkali has a hydrolysis effect on a certain surfactant, and the solubility of the hydrolysis product is different from that of the original product.

Therefore, the alkali resistance of this surfactant in an alkaline aqueous solution can be judged from the change in the appearance of the solution. The alkali resistance of the wetting agent can be tested by observing the turbidity of the surfactant solution after adding alkali, and the wetting speed of the solution on standard cotton canvas.
